Memoir

In January 2013 Kerryn awoke from an induced coma in Intensive Care at Royal Adelaide Hospital. She had no idea where she was, why she was there, or how long she had been there. Unbeknown to her she was gravely ill, having contracted a flesh eating bacteria that ravaged her body, following a minor bike accident 9 days before. Kerryn teetered on the edge of life and death as the bacteria poisoned her body causing multiple organ failure. Numerous life saving surgeries followed including the amputation of her entire right arm and shoulder, leaving Kerryn as an amputee and requiring many painful skin grafts. Her miraculous survival and recovery is attributed to her high level of fitness, and her determination to live.

Kerryn’s story follows a successful recovery with some harrowing and hilarious tales of learning to live with one arm. From there, Kerryn set big audacious goals and went to work on achieving them. She refused to allow her disability to hold her back from chasing her dreams and embracing opportunities that came her way. From finding a new career, to founding a charity to support amputees, returning to her favourite sport of triathlon, then going on to compete for Australia as a Para-triathlete, Kerryn triumphantly succeeded.

“Mostly Ups” is a journey of survival, of overcoming the odds, of recovery and setbacks, working through grief and loss, learning to live with a newly acquired disability, rebuilding fitness and good health, finding happiness and a sense of purpose, and chasing opportunities that Kerryn never dreamed possible. It’s a true account of resilience and having the courage to thrive despite what life throws at you. It’s an inspiring story that proves what’s possible if you never give up.
